Shootings of Dogs by Police - 6/18/2012-7/22/2012

A 10-yr-old boy watched in horror as his pet Pit Bull was shot and killed by police, who claimed the had attacked a man unprovoked. The boy, and other witnesses, dispute this claim. They state that the boy was out walking his dog and was playing with him. The bitten man mistook the play for an attack and tried to "help" by beating the dog with a 2x4. The dog turned around and bit him. And then police shot and killed the dog.

I am not certain why the family had this dog euthanized, as he was only shot in the leg. The family claims their bull mastiff was not running loose, while police claim the dog tried to charge an officer. They show one photo, in which it is difficult to tell if the dog is loose or still on his chain.

This is a rather confusing story. A Pit Bull got loose. Police were called. A neighbor who recognized the dog was able to safely lead the dog back to his own yard, by the collar. For some reason, and this is where it is confusing, the dog was still loose and police were agitating him. Several police officers respected the dog's behavior and stepped away from the dog's territory. At some point, the dog jumped up on an officer, who then shot him in the head. The owner of the dog - and I cannot fathom this - REFUSED to put her supposedly "beloved" family pet into her own car, so police had to drive the dying dog to an animal shelter, while trying to arrange veterinary care. The dog died.

A Colorado woman is suing police for the shooting death of her dog last year. She had called police after receiving a threatening phone call. When police arrived, her German Shepherd, Ava, approached officers with a rawhide in her mouth. She called the dog back and apparently having a rawhide in one's mouth is sufficient grounds to shoot and kill the dog...who officers are, of course, claiming charged at them.

I will warn you, the picture will make you cry (not just because of the dead dog, but the utter horror and sadness on the face of the dog's guardian). The dog, who appears to be some type of Shepherd or Retriever, was the victim of a police shooting after officers chased a suspect through the dog's yard and left the gate open. The dog escaped and "crossed paths" with an officer, who then shot and killed the family's beloved pet.

A big dog killed his owner. When he continued to act aggressively and prohibited firefighters from accessing the human victim, police shot and killed the dog.

A Marion County deputy is under investigation after he shotgunned to death his own police dog. The officer claims he feared for his own life...this despite the fact that the dog was shot and killed in his own kennel. The dog had escaped at some point and bit the officer. When he was cornered in the kennel, the officer decided the dog was so dangerous he needed to shoot him with a shotgun.

A Pit Bull puppy (7-mos-old) and his buddy got loose from their Menlo Park home. They were running around when they "scared" a woman, who called police. Police arrived and multiple officers approached the dogs, who were described as "barking and lunging". So obviously, the officers had to shoot at both dogs multiple times! One dog was struck in the face, right through the eye. The dog was so freaking vicious that after he was shot, he ran home!

A dog so dangerous that he was loose in the middle of an "illegal" party was shot and killed by police breaking up that party. The dog was guilty of loping towards the officer. Make sure to teach your dogs all about stranger danger.

Police in Henrico, Virginia add insult to injury when they shoot and kill a family's pet Pit Bull after letting them know their family member was murdered the night before. The dog did not bite anyone. But hey, the police officer feels real bad about it.

Running towards a person is now dangerous behavior! Police shot and killed a dog who was just running towards him.

A potentially intoxicated woman was driving around, endangering everyone with her reckless behavior. In her vehicle was her dog, an Australian Shepherd. Police pulled her over. The officer approached and noticed the dog in the backseat, lunging to get out. He asked the woman to roll the window up, but she did not comply. The dog jumped out of the window and charged at the officer. Although he did have pepper spray and a taser at his disposal, he ended up shooting and killing the dog.

SWAT raiding a home shot and killed a dog who broke free of his chain and charged officers. Because it's totally normal for a dog not to be freaked out by armed intruders, yo.

St. Louis police are not sorry about the shooting death of a family pet. The story unfolded when a deputy was sent to serve papers, despite being confronted by two loose dogs on the property. In lieu of coming back later, calling the homeowners, contacting dispatch for animal control, or AGAIN coming back later, the deputy decided to get out of his vehicle. When the larger dog, described as a Pit bull, started to approach and bark, instead of getting back into his vehicle, the deputy decides to discharge his taser three times in a matter of 14 seconds. When that fails, he decides the obvious course of action is to shoot the dog in the face. The dog runs off into the woods. The officer searches for a good, oh I dunno, fifteen minutes before leaving a note on the occupant's door NOT mentioning the fact their dog was shot. The homeowners found their dog dying and, in an equally stupid move, decided to suffocate the dog (who probably would have died anyways). And, again, St. Louis police aren't sorry about any of that!

In an epic move to protect the world from the woes of an ounce of marijuana, police in Garland used a no-knock warrant to break in to someone's home and shoot their beloved 10-yr-old family pet, described as a Labrador Retriever cross. Well, I sure feel safer now that an ounce of weed is off the street and a companion dog is dead!

A small dog was being walked on-leash when a neighborhood dog broke through a gate and attacked the smaller dog. The dog would not let the small dog go until police tasered him. The attacking dog ran away and was fatally shot when the dog walked towards police. The dog did not attempt to bite or harm a person but did end up killing the smaller dog. The small dog is described as a Yorkshire Terrier, the attacking dog as a Pit Bull.

Two dogs running loose attacked a man, inflicting multiple bite wounds on him. The man escaped to the top of vehicle when police arrived. One of the dogs charged at officers, who shot the dog and killed him. The other dog was secured by animal control.
LINK

Two dogs described as Pit Bulls were running loose. One of those dogs nipped two children, causing minor injuries. The same dog charged an officer. The officer was on top of a vehicle and safe, while the dog just kept circling the car. When the dog put his front feet on the hood, the officer shot and killed the dog. The other dog was safely confined without incidence.

Earlier this year, a dog described as an Australian Shepherd running loose was shot and killed by a police officer. The guardian of the dog is now suing the offier.

A police K-9 was shot dead by his own handler. The German Shepherd had been exhibiting signs of aggression when his handler took him to a veterinarian hospital for evaluation. While the dog was being leashed, he attacked his handler and would not let go of the man's arm. The officer shot him.

Shooting other animals,

If you're a mountain lion, stay out of Rapid City, South Dakota. In a span of 8 days, police shot and killed two mountain lions. One swiped at a dog, the other crossed a street - that's death penalty level shit right there.
LINK

Bambi and his sibling were shot by police, after the Department of Natural Resources FLIPPED OUT over the fact that the deer - handraised by people - were wearing bandanas, potentially part of an illegal gang trading in stolen gallbladders or something. The two friendly deer were killed on the property of the idiot, but well-intentioned, people who put the bandanas on them in the first place (don't do that).
LINK

Montana police shot and killed a black bear, because he was rifling through the trash, undoubtedly trying to steal people's identities. This is a shoot dead offense in Montana.
LINK

Canadian police shoot a declawed mountain lion after the escaped big cat mauls a dog.
LINK

Maybe this goat had a better death than what he probably faced with his "owner". A goat got loose and was running over "women and children" (who cares about men!) and the "owner" refused to help round up the goat b/c it was the sabbath and all. GOD SAYS LET MARAUDING GOATS MARAUD. Police say shoot marauding goats, and so they did.
LINK

Don't mess with chimpanzees and keep them as pets, that's just dumb. Police were forced to shoot two loose chimpanzees, because they probably wanted to keep their testicles and faces intact. One was killed, the other was tranquilized and obviously returned to her "owners"!
LINK

Dutch police shot and killed a loose wallaby out of "concern for the animal" and, of course, traffic.
LINK

Police in Indiana shot and killed three pigs who fell off of a livestock hauler. They were being transported in a truck SO SECURE that the pigs could just lift the door up. The pigs were not 400 lbs, contrary to the article, but 250-lb 6-mos-old piglets headed for slaughter.
